Dr. Ray Pastore has nine years of instructional design experience, which includes extensive corporate, K-12, and higher education experience. His research focuses on multiple representations, computer-based tools, and metacognitive strategies that support learning from a multimedia environment. He recently earned his Ph.D. in Instructional Systems with a minor in Educational Psychology from Penn State University and is currently an Assistant Professor of Emerging Technology at Slippery Rock University in Pennsylvania.

Research: I have been developing a line of research that focuses on multiple representations, computer-based tools, and metacognitive strategies that support learning from a multimedia environment (please see my curriculum vitae for a list of publications and presentations). Using quantitative methods, my dissertation sought to examine the effects of diagrams and time-compressed instruction (i.e., instruction that has been increased in speed without sacrificing quality) on learning and learners’ perceptions of cognitive load.

Teaching: For the last three years, I have been teaching both face-to-face and online courses at Penn State University, and most recently, I have been teaching face-to-face courses at Slippery Rock University. Additionally, I have served as a faculty member at the University of Phoenix Online since 2005.  My teaching experience includes a myriad of courses on topics including: technology use in the K-16 classroom and workplace, instructional design practice and theory, and multimedia development.
