Research Interests:

While at Penn State University I initiated a line of research that focuses on the use of multiple representations, metacognitive strategies, and computer-based tools to support learning from a multimedia environment.  My dissertation study examines the effects of visual representations and time-compressed instruction (i.e., instruction that has been increased in speed without sacrificing quality) on learner achievement of tests measuring facts, concepts, rules/procedures, and problem solving learning objectives. This study investigates the impact that time-compressed instruction has on achievement, determines whether visual representations complement or hinder its effectiveness, and makes recommendations for its use in a multimedia environment. Additionally, I am working on several other projects including studies on the effects of image complexity and sequencing on a self-explanation strategy from student learning in a multimedia environment, pre- and in- service teachers’ perceptions of gaming in the K-12 classroom, and the effects of podcasting on reflection in an online college course.  I expect this line of research to add value and contribute to the instructional design and technology field.
