What to look for in an Instructional Design and Technology Master’s Degree Program

I see this question posted time and time again on LinkedIn so I figured it was time to blog about it.Here is a list of things you should look for and consider when looking into that ISD Master’s program.

1. Do your research – Not all instructional design programs are the same. Some focus on K-12, Corporate, or Higher Ed. Some focus on all three but more than likely focus on one more than the others.

2. Who are the professors? Do you recognize their names? Have they worked in the field? For instance, if you are planning to go into the corporate world after graduation, make sure the professors (or at least some) have worked in the corporate world as full time instructional designers (not just consulting either but full time jobs).

3. Look at the professors resumes and/or website. Do they have degrees in Instructional Technology (or similar field as our field has 20 different names)? Where did they go to school? Are they involved in professional organizations in the field?

4. Are the professors publishing? Do they present at conferences? Do their topics interest you? What organizations do they belong to and work with? Does any of that align with your goals?

5. Are the professors full time or adjunct? Adjunct professors usually have other full time jobs meaning you and your class may not be their highest priority. A program should have mostly full time professors.

5. What does the program look like? Do they have a comprehensive website? Do they have a facebook page? Twitter? LinkedIn? Not that these are vital but they do show the program is keeping current with social media. Additionally, a facebook page can be a great place to learn about the students and alumni in the program. I would encourage you to join it and see if its active. An active social media page indicates there is a lot of interaction in the program.

6. Where do the students who graduate from that program end up? What kind of jobs do they get?

7. What kind of reputation does that program have? You may not really be able to find this, but are they from a respected university? If you cannot find information about the program from their website (like who are their professors), I would be very hesitant of that program.

8. Talk to students from that program if you can. Students will offer advice that differs from professors.

9. Please before you apply, talk to a professor in that program (PLEASE make sure you talk to a professor in addition to anyone else you talk to). Have a list of questions for them and see what kind of feeling you get – even if its a phone/skype meeting: Please have it. This is a sign of the kind of access you will have to faculty once you enroll.

10. Do you get to work with real clients or is an internship required? You need at least one real experience before you graduate if you want to get a job in instructional design. Look at the job market, every single jobs asks for some experience and everyone else you will be competing with in the job market will have that internship.

I hope that helps. While this list is not everything you need to look for, it is a great start.

Apple sells 2x as many iPads as iMacs to schools – Is this a good thing?

While I think it is great that schools are adopting new technology I have to wonder, did schools jump the gun here? I know that some schools are definitely using the iPad for some really cool things and I love to see innovation. However, I wonder, and this really only applies to schools who bought iPads to replace computers, do all of these schools have enough computers for each student already? I ask because you can purchase a PC for the same price as the iPad (there is no educational discount on iPads so they are $500 for schools). If a school does not have a computer for each student, I would question their purchase of iPads for each student (if that is what they did because just purchasing some iPads is not what I am talking about here in this post). Computers are significantly more powerful than iPads and can do much more. I only recommend that my students by a computer first and if they have more money, then get the iPad. Do not just get the iPad and expect it to replace their laptop. So while I like mobile/tablet technology and think it does have a place in education, I would question anyone who is using that technology to replace computers because it does not and I do know that some schools are replacing computers with iPads which I believe is not a good way to use this technology.

iPhone 5 Rumors

Two rumors have been really turning up a lot lately with a lot of evidence, however, as always, do not trust any apple rumors until Apple announces them because so many times they have turned out to be untrue.

First rumor: iPhone 5 will be out in October. This sounds about right. Everyone is expecting a Fall announcement.

Second rumor: the connector (white plug that connects your iPhone to charger/computer) has been changed. It will be smaller. While this will make tons of chargers, plugs, car chargers, etc obsolete I think this might just be true. Large dock connectors just take up space and Apple is very concerned with design so this would not surprise me. Its also a chance for Apple to make more money from us. One of the best Android Apps: Airdroid

This is an app I have written about before and one that I use quite often. I just saw this write up on airdroid and thought I would post it. For those who are unfamiliar with this app here is what it does:

Spotify Review

Here are my thoughts on spotify….

What is spotify?

It is a music service that you can use on your computer, mobile phone, or tablet. There are two main features. One is a radio. The second is a playlist where you choose any song and then you can play that song. The service is free on your computer. The radio service is free on your phone/tablet but you need to pay $10 a month to have access to your playlist and offline listening.

Radio service thoughts.

The radio is fine, but it is just like Pandora. I think Pandora has the market cornered here so I could really care less for this service. If you are looking for an alternative to Pandora then this service is great I guess. And this service is free on all devices, but then again so is pandora.

Playlist service thoughts.

The playlist idea is pretty cool. I like that its free on my PC. I do not like that you have to pay for it on your phone/tablet though, even if you are using wifi. I figured out that if I just bought all the songs I like from like amazon or itunes, I would actually spend less than the $10 a month spotify fee and actually own the mp3s. So why pay the $10? Well I wont. Like myself, I would imagine that most people already have most of their favorite songs on their computer, so that 1 new song I like every few months is not worth paying the spotify fee for.

How do I think spotify could improve and move forward?

The only way spotify is going to survive is if they make that playlist feature free. I personally am probably only going to use spotify on my PC. For phone/tablet radio I already use Pandora. I would switch to spotify if it were free. Essentially spotify would make money from me if they had ads on their free playlist service. Instead I will hardly be using the service. There is just too much competition from similar playlist services like Google and Apple which dominate the mobile market for spotify unless their service becomes free.

Clueful Pulled From Apple’s App Store

And this is why I hate the apple app store and will never have an iPhone (at least as my main phone). I do have an iPad and Macbook though so I do like apple, I just hate iTunes and their app store.

What Clueful did, as The Huffington Post described back when it was released in May, was tell you exactly what sort of misbehavior your apps were up on your iPhone. Does the app you just downloaded access your address book? GPS coordinates? Social networking accounts? Clueful claimed to be “the world’s first and only app” to tell you so.”
